Painting the body red
After new years I took a day to get it ready for paint. Had to sand all the inside, engine bay, boot and inner doors, boot & bonnet. Had a day off before coming back to add colour & clear. The colour is Velocity red which is one of Mazda’s colours. It looks great. Now need to block the outside back an prepare it all for paint.
On the 8th Jan I sanded the hi fill primer back to a smooth finish. Some places rubbed back to bare metal and there are also a couple of small areas that require filler. Apart from the scuttle panel, the other areas aren’t much bigger than a 5 cent pc. The new scuttle panel has a crease through the middle of it which looks standard but I am adding filler to get a consistent look from one side to the other.
The coming weekend (15th Jan) I will sand back the filler & spray over the bare metal areas so it is ready for colour. I also have to sand the doors, boot lid & bonnet back ready for paint.

So I have rubbed the car, doors, boot, bonnet & wheel arches back over the past week. Some areas went back to bare metal so I used a one shot primer to cover them up. I then rubbed that back with some 1500 sandpaper.
last nightIi started to fit the doors back on so the body can be painted all in one go to keep it all looking consistent. Plans are to paint the exterior next Wednesday the 26th Jan. Can’t wait.

Wednesday 26th Jan (Australia Day) Let the Painting begin. My Brother Juzza (Justin) came over to help paint the mini. Well he didn’t really help, he did it all. I played assistant and mixed the paint, moved things around and fetched the drinks. He started with a light grey base to make it a bit more consistent before starting with the red. The red is quite transparent so you can see the undercoat through the first coat.
The second coat had better coverage and then the third gave it complete coverage. We then ran some 6mm fine line tape to shape the bonnet stripes before covering up the whole car except the roof so we could paint the white. Juzza painted the roof & bonnet stripes with a white base then a white pearl to match the red metallic. We let it dry for about 20 mins then removed the plastic sheet from the car ready for the clear.
We went with three good heavy coats of clear which came up a treat.
Just needs to be sanded with some 1500 grit and then polished but that will be done at a later stage when most of the car has been put back together.
